The story is set in 1280, in Rosentall Castle.
A family of acrobats arrives at the castle for the King's birthday and one of them is pregnant.
The acrobats are old friends of the royal family and are warmly welcomed by Princess Silvia Belmont of Ferona.
Invited by the King, Prince Rob of Norfolken, Lord of Papyren, also arrives at the castle and immediately wins the princess's heart.
The King invited him to reorganize the defenses, given the incompetence of his younger son Jorkin.
That same night, however, the enemy takes action, surrounding the castle.
Jorkin, instead of controlling the defenses, tries to rape the young Kriss, one of the acrobats group.
That night Valka gives birth to a beautiful baby boy, Niko (the protagonist and narrator of the story).
The enemy is led by Made Trofen, ex-wife of the previous King accused of witchcraft.
During the attack Kriss is killed while fleeing to Jorkin.
The King challenges Made Trofen to a duel for control of the castle.
Jorkin, however, kills his father in a fit of madness and Silvia must replace him in the duel.
When Valka finds out about Kriss's death, she tries to kill Jorkin, but then is called by the dragon Mandragon, her mother, and joins her, transforming herself into a dragon.
Silvia wins the duel, killing Made Trofen's youngest son, who however does not accept defeat.
The beginning of an interesting saga, splendidly illustrated by Giménez, also author of the cycle "The Caste of Meta-barons".
As with the previous saga, unfortunately, I decided not to purchase the subsequent volumes.
