Tony Stark's funeral is held on the roof of his company.
Jim Rhodes does not take well the presence at the funeral of Kathy Dare, the woman who shot Tony and eventually led to his death.
During the ceremony, S.E. are attacked by a group of super-villains, led by Spymaster.
These are Blacklash, Beetle and Blizzard.
War Machine manages to defeat them, but when the Avengers arrive (Wasp, Hawkeye, Hank Pym and Living Lightning) they mistake him for the enemy.

War Machine confronts Meltdown, who wants to destroy a nuclear research facility in the Stane, now S.E.
During the clash he explains that he acquired his powers in that plant, due to the radioactive waste stored here illegally by the government.
In the subplot, Jim becomes the lover of Rae LaCoste, Tony's friend (with some hint of the racial problem that this entails, apparently still widespread in 1992!).
Morgan Stark, Tony's cousin, convinces Marcy Pearson to frame Jim with fake evidence of Tony's murder.
Tony Stark, cryogenically kept alive, remembers his childhood.
