The story tells of an old Jew who immigrated to the United States from Eastern Europe.
Surviving the massacre in his village, he wrote and signed a contract with God on a stone.
What the contract contains is not revealed, but when he is entrusted with an orphan girl to raise, he feels he has been rewarded.
Unfortunately, the little girl dies of illness when she is still young and the man loses his faith and throws away the contract.
He begins to make money buying and selling real estate until he feels rich enough to sign a new contract with God.
This time he has it drawn up by the wise elders of the neighborhood, to make it more valid.
As soon as the contract is received, the man dies of a heart attack.

The Street Singer

In the 1930s there were men who began to sing in the alleys of the poorest neighborhoods, living on alms.
One of them is invited by a mature woman to come up to her house.
While they make love, she promises to lead him to success as an opera singer, given her past in the industry.
The man returns home to his wife and children, spending the money he has earned on alcohol.
The next day he would like to go back to the woman and fulfill his dream of success, but unfortunately he no longer remembers in which alley he met her.

The Super

The maintainer of the old buildings in New York was called "The Super".
In the building in the Bronx protagonist of these stories, the Super is a robust German scary-looking, that everyone fears.
A little girl takes advantage of her solitude by being invited into her home.
After getting paid a nickel to show him her private parts, she poisons his dog (his only friend) and steals all his savings.
The Super goes after her but is denounced by the tenants.
When the police arrive, the desperate man kills himself, with his dog in his arms.

The protagonist of the adventure is the author's family (already known in "To the Heart of the Storm").
Like many other families in the neighborhood, when the warm weather arrives, they take advantage of a holiday in the countryside.
Will is 15 years old and that summer he has his first sexual experience with a married woman.
A girl, looking for a rich husband, is subjected to an attempted rape by a penniless guy.
Rescued by a medical student (less glamorous than the rapist), she ends up engaged to him.
