Michael Cray, aka Deathblow, has been working for the I.O. for years, but has a crisis of conscience.
He discovered he has a tumor that is killing him rapidly.
During a mission in Iraq he kills a priest belonging to the Order of the Cross, a sect within the Church created to fight the Evil One.
The mission of the I.O. free the Black Angel, the demon imprisoned 2000 years ago by the Order.
The Angel wants to absorb the powers of a child from New York who is working miracles, Christopher.
The boy is protected by Sister Mary, who belongs to the Order of the Cross.
Travis Trickle, Cray's boss in the I.O., is helping the demon find the boy, spreading death in the city.
Deathblow's ex-wife, Gaby, is searching for the mysterious killer for the FBI.
Deathblow catches up with the boy and the nun and decides to help them escape Trickle.
Having reached the Order's monastery, Cray discovers that his destiny is to face and kill the Black Angel.
He also discovers that the diagnosed tumor is actually a genetic mutation caused by the substances he was exposed to in Team 7, which are slowly enhancing him.
The Black Angel attacks the monastery and kidnaps the boy, taking him to New York for the final sacrifice.
Gaby has also fallen into the hands of demons and is killed by Trickle.
Deathblow arrives too late to save her, but manages to avenge her, after discovering that his wife died years before and that her body was possessed by an Archangel.
To face the army of demons Deathblow receives the help of some old friends of Team 7, advised by John Lynch: Backlash (Mark Slayton), Cole Cash and Jackson Dane.
Together they face the Black Angel and the 4 horsemen of the Apocalypse.
Only Deathblow and Christopher survive the clash, but the boy uses his power to restore reality, as if the clash had not happened.
Inspiring and well-scripted story.
Perhaps there are a few too many "plastic poses" created by Jim Lee and Tim Sale, but on the other hand they are the same ones that brought the Wildstorm universe to success.
