Christine Blaze is fleeing from the demonic agents of Cardinal Lazarus, after stealing the Creation equation from the Vatican.
The Raths and the Hounds reach her in New York and kill her, before she manages to contact John Lynch, but she still manages to send the equation to the web.
Devan Lawless, Max Faraday's only friend, downloads the equation onto Max's computer.
After reading the equation on the screen, Max feels strange and the computer explodes.

Tobruk of the Fallen comes to Max and Devan's rescue.
John Lynch is informed of Christine's death and decides to investigate.

Caitlin Fairchild decides to help Lynch with his investigation.
The Fallen come to the aid of Max and Devan when they are attacked by the Cardinal's Raths.
Max uses his new power to teleport home with Devan, but finds it devastated.
Fortunately his sister Jenny is well, but he begins to worry about the girl he is in love with and who he has never met, to whom he sent part of the equation, Susanna Chaste.
John Lynch and Caitlin arrive at Max's house, to help them.
