The sarcophagus of Merlin is found in an English archaeological excavation.
Merlin admits to being a mutant.
When they open it, Merlin wakes up and tries to win the favor of the current King (John Fitzgerald Kennedy, President of the United States in 1963).
Reaching the White House he sees Kennedy playing his daughter, but being too young he does not recognize him as President.
Merlin therefore tries to attract attention by sabotaging the launch of a rocket from NASA.
Thor intervenes and ruins his plans.
After the fight he convinces him to go back to hibernation in the sarcophagus.

A lava man, an underground race of Earth, attacks the surface, but Thor repels him.
Donald Blake finally finds the courage to confess his love to Jane Foster, but it's too late.
Considering him a coward, he resigns and follows another doctor.

The Space Phantom attacks the Earth.
Its power is to take the form and powers of another living being, which in the meantime is bound in another dimension, Limbo.
The alien takes the place of Hulk and attacks the other Avengers with his form.
Hulk leaves the group and walks off with Rick Jones, who then witnesses the transformation into the Space Phantom.
As Iron Man takes on Hulk again (still the Phantom), Rick warns the Avengers of the deception.
To face the alien Ant-Man modifies his powers and becomes Giant-Man.
The Phantom takes the place of Giant-Man, then of Iron Man, but Thor's arrival allows his defeat.
Disappointed Hulk leaves the Avengers.
