Max Fridman is called into service by the French secret services for a mission in Budapest in February 1938.
The agents of a cell called "Rhapsody" were all assassinated, with the exception of the young Etel Moget.
Max meets the frightened girl and decides to hide her to protect her.
Fridman finds himself at the center of a war of Nazi, Russian and Hungarian spies.
He discovers that the massacre was carried out for some secret documents offered for sale, concerning a ship bound for Spain.
Max and Etel secretly leave in pursuit of the ship.
During the chase, a sentimental relationship arises between them, destined however not to have a future.
The ship is blown up by Russian spies when Max reaches it.
Back in Paris he discovers that the whole operation was a distraction, while the Nazis organized the (peaceful) invasion of Austria.
