While the Horde of the Living is recovering from the last battle, a squad of Sarmatians sets out on patrol, with Thusia.
The small group of warriors is attacked by Kurgan survivors, taking heavy losses.
The new mourning among the warriors forces Thusia and her two sisters to reveal themselves.
They are the perpetrators of crimes within the Horde.
Thusia is charged with killing King Kymris, but the scribe has doubts.
As the march begins, an elephant mysteriously loses control and injures Queen Simissea.
Thusia saves her life and in return gets told the story of Argypea.
The Sarmati seer was driven out of the tribe many years earlier after she confessed to mating with Mithras, the chief god of the Callipideans and Cimmerians.
Simissea had chosen exile, as an alternative to having her executed.
That evening Thusia has the opportunity to kill Kymris while they are making love, but she fails.
Meanwhile, her sisters reveal to the most important Sarmatians that they are the three daughters of Argypea and Mithras, all endowed with divine powers (strangely similar to those of the Atlantean magicians).
The two sisters convince the Sarmatians to rebel against the queen.
Many Sarmatian warriors decide to leave the Horde and inform the queen shortly before a new Hittite attack.
Thusia refuses to leave the horde and is tortured.
Eumèlos, one of the Atlantean magicians, reveals that Azaès is the real father of the three sisters.

Chapter 4: The Death of a King

Eumèlos tells how Azaès used his mental powers to trick Argypea into raping her.
Thusia decides to help the Horde, killing the Hittite king and thus causing their retreat.
Thusia and King Marak leave on board a griffin for the Hittite capital.
During the journey they witness the massacre of the Sarmatian warriors who have abandoned the Horde, thanks to the traitor Azaès.
Thusia and Marak fulfill their mission, but return too late to save King Kymris, who was killed in battle.
Thusia takes revenge by killing her father.
The Living Horde returns home and Thusia joins them.
